Environmental Icons and Terminology

 

Items identified as recycled contain material that has been diverted and recovered from the waste stream, including post-consumer content and pre-consumer recycled content.

 

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo identifies products that support the responsible use of forest resources. This includes products made of wood from well managed forests and/or containing post-consumer recycled content certified in accordance with the rules of the Forest Stewardship Council. The ENERGY STAR® mark identifies products that meet U.S. EPA and Department of Energy standards for energy efficiency. Learn more at www.energystar.gov.

 

Cradle to Cradle™ is a certification program that certifies products to four levels (Basic, Silver, Gold and Platinum) based on product life cycle environmental impacts. Learn more at   www.c2ccertified.com

 

The European Ecolabel is a voluntary scheme, established in 1992 to encourage businesses to market products and services that are kinder to the environment. Products and services awarded the Ecolabel carry the flower logo, allowing consumers - including public and private purchasers - to identify them easily.

 

The Blue Angel (Blauer Engel) is a German certification for products and services that have environmentally friendly aspects.

 

The Nordic Swan Eco Label is the official Nordic ecolabel. The Swan logo demonstrates that a product is a good environmental choice. Products featuring the logo fulfil certain criteria using methods such as samples from independent laboratories, certificates and control visits.

 

The PEFC is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.
PEFC provides a common PEFC Logo for labelling of those products which originate in forests certified according to the PEFC-endorsed schemes.

 

 

Plastic products can provide proof that they are compostable by successfully meeting the harmonised European standard, EN 13432

 

Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers.

 

 

The Staples® EcoEasy(sm) icon identifies products that Staples has determined to have a reduced impact on the environment compared to other products in their class based on their environmental design features.
